Quarterly Update from New Leaf Climate

View in browser Dear Leafer,  Summer is here—and with it, the usual contradictions: smoke, floods and sunshine, funding wins and budget freezes, promise and precarity. In short, it’s a perfect season to be working in environmental finance. These past few months have reminded us that progress rarely arrives all at once. But it does show up—sometimes as a check in the mail, sometimes as a seedling in the ground, sometimes as a fireline built by a youth crew with second chances in their back pockets. Across the country, we’re seeing new momentum for place-based work: more partners stepping up, more capital moving, and more clarity about what’s needed to scale land-based solutions that last. That clarity is hard-won. In Missouri, it looks like financing landowners and small businesses to bring native grasses back to degraded rangelands. In California, it means piloting a new fuel treatment revenue model before the fire season—not after. And in Minnesota, it’s investing in local seed and supply chains to replant for the climate we’re entering, not the one we remember. Onward, Team New Leaf Designing a Nature Bank in Missouri We’re laying the groundwork for a CDFI model applied to nature in Missouri, aimed at restoring native grasses and forests while building wealth for rural landowners and small businesses. With support from the Missouri Department of Conservation and local partners, we’ve begun stakeholder outreach and are starting to build a local team to guide this work. As part of this build out, we are excited to be welcoming Megan Buchanan onto our team to lead this work. Megan was previously the Director of Resilient Lands at The Nature Conservancy in MO and has deep experience and ties to the state - welcome Megan! Introducing a New Loan Program for Rural Resilience Together with Edward Jones, we’re co-developing the Rural Resilience Loan Program to fund working landowners and rural small businesses. This revolving fund will provide low-interest capital for land management, climate-smart infrastructure, and market access for new revenue streams. Investor Meeting with the Arbor Day Foundation  With the Arbor Day Foundation, we co-hosted a gathering at the Doris Duke Foundation of impact investors and conservation finance experts in New York City to explore one of the most critical pieces of the restoration economy: native plant nurseries. The conversation centered on how strategic investment in nursery infrastructure can unlock large-scale forestry and habitat restoration, create resilient supply chains, and generate lasting ecological and economic benefits. New Research: Making the Business Case for the Voluntary Carbon Markets Voluntary carbon markets offer real potential for companies seeking nature-aligned impact. In partnership with the American Forest Foundation, we outlined how forests and water can anchor credible, cost-effective carbon strategies for corporations looking to reduce operational exposures to physical environmental risks. Field Updates Our time out on the road exploring new projects and engaging with our friends, peers, clients, and investors continues apace: Agave Heritage Festival: Jake and Mike attended the Agave Heritage Festival in Arizona, deepening our work with Bat Conservation International and learning firsthand how desert plants, bats, and low-tech conservation strategies are intertwined SF Climate Week presentation: Mike spoke on a panel at SF Climate Week focused on Carbon Finance for Wildfire Resilience and Forest Restoration, sharing New Leaf’s approach to designing financial tools for place-based fire mitigation. Tennessee Nursery Research: Harry visited the East Tennessee State nursery as part of ongoing Forest Inputs Resilience (FIR) Fund research, exploring private landowner supply chains across a wider set of geographies. Conservation Finance Network Bootcamp: Erica participated in CFN’s annual Bootcamp in New Haven, which this year included a panel presentation by Harry (a bootcamp alum himself), deepening knowledge and networks for catalytic capital for conservation. Minnesota Seedling Network: Kunsang and Harry met with stakeholders across Minnesota with nurseries and cooperatives working to scale climate-smart seedling supply through a TNC-backed project. The Quarter Ahead Q3 – which is already in full swing – has been and will be a busy one. We’re heading to the Land Trust Alliance Rally, preparing for a Arbor Day Foundation convening at Salesforce offices in Chicago, and finalizing terms for our first loan deployment to a native seedling nursery. We’ll also continue refining tools with partners through the Conservation Finance Roundtable and other working groups. Goodbye Interns We're sending off our incredible Baucus Institute interns with gratitude. Nari Lee led research on rural businesses and support programs available to them in Missouri. Quarterly Update from New Leaf Climate

Dear Leafer, As spring arrives, we’re reminded that resilience is rooted in adaptation. The past few months have brought both sobering challenges and renewed momentum for our mission at New Leaf Climate. In California, the scars of a difficult winter fire season remain visible across communities and ecosystems. But even in the wake of destruction, recovery efforts are underway—restoration crews are returning to the land, and local partnerships are laying the groundwork for long-term resilience. These efforts reaffirm what we’ve long believed: the most effective climate solutions are those that work with nature, not against it. Meanwhile, the policy landscape continues to shift rapidly. Although some federal climate programs have regained footing (for now) after a turbulent series of freezes and legal challenges, the broader picture is clear— while the public sector is essential in the fight, relying solely on public funding is a risky bet. Timelines are slow, priorities change, and vital work cannot wait. That’s why we’re doubling down on our approach: unlocking private capital to power nature-based climate solutions at scale. In recent months, we've made meaningful strides—from expanding access to carbon markets for underserved landowners and designing innovative financing tools for wildfire resilience to advising nurseries and small businesses on expansion and modernization. We know the path ahead requires persistence, creativity, and collaboration. But the momentum is real and growing. Whether you’re investing, partnering, or simply staying informed, your support helps move this work forward with urgency and impact. With appreciation and purpose, Team New Leaf  Financing Small Landowners for Wildfire Fuel Treatment We are excited to announce that with the Fall River RCD, New Leaf Climate Partners has been awarded funding from the US Forest Service to pilot an innovative fuel reduction treatment program for wildfire resilience with small forest landowners in Northern California This program will support fuel treatment needs through prescribed burns, thinning, and waste removal on private, non-industrial forestlands and pilot a new carbon credit methodology designed for wildfire mitigation The award comes on the heels of our recent research on wildfire fuel treatment needs by income levels in California, which highlights the resilience gap for high-poverty communities   Seedling Assessment in the North Star State  We've teamed up with The Nature Conservancy in Minnesota to build a seedling sales and distribution strategy for Minnesota Our role is to support the Farm & Forest Growers Cooperative (FFGC),  a network of small private farmers coordinating to grow and sell seedlings needed for healthy forests and communities in the North Woods FFGC is galvanizing local, climate-adapted genetics to help map and prioritize new seed collection capacity across the state Sustainable Small Business Support in the Show Me State  We've also teamed up with local partners in Missouri to evaluate financing strategies that fit local project needs – from native grasses on grazing land to sawmill infrastructure to incentivize grassland transitions and shortleaf pine forestry Thanks to the support and vision of the Community Impact team at Edward Jones, our work combines supporting and investing in climate-smart small businesses, with understanding bigger picture questions around the type, scale, and access to resources communities need to build resilient, sustainable and inclusive economies New Research - Demand Assessment  We are excited to share Module 3, highlighting the market for agroforestry, including agroforestry practices, drivers of demand and impacts on seedling sales, in our 2024 US Land Restoration Demand Assessment This research, funded by The Rockefeller Foundation and the US Endowment for Forestry & Communities, marks a significant step in understanding and advancing sustainable land use and land restoration efforts across the United States New Leaf's research builds on our 2023 Forest Nursery Assessment, which provided a comprehensive analysis of the US seedling supply chain Field Updates Our time out on the road exploring new projects and engaging with our friends, peers, clients, and investors continues apace: Harry, Jake and Mike traveled to Patagonia, AZ to meet with a native plant nursery and project partners to develop a loan guarantee structure The team hosted a strategy session in New York with key funders to lay out a collaborative and coordinated approach to 2025 Harry and Mike attended the Red Sky wildfire conference in San Francisco, CA to connect with funders and practitioners working on the wildfire crisis in the West Mike was recognized in the Denver Business Journal in the Who's Who of Impact Investing Harry, Greg and Mike attended a strategy convening in Boulder, CO on Building the Next Carbon Generation Carbon Market The Team held its annual offsite in Hill Country Texas, where they visited Bamberger Ranch Preserve and Roam Ranch, and left inspired by the regenerative practices, and the leaders behind them The California team climbed an climbed an old growth redwood outside Santa Cruz, CA alongside an expert climber and conservation biologist to learn about carbon and biodiversity benefits of old growth trees Mike visited Pine Grove Youth Conservation Camp to learn about alternative approaches to juvenile rehabilitation and met with firefighters on the front lines of the Eaton Fire The Quarter Ahead We’re on the road again in the months ahead. Our Forestry Primer for Climate Week

Dear Leafer, Autumn greetings.  As many of you know, next week the world descends on New York for Climate Week - a moment of collaboration, optimism, commitment, and traffic.  The summer has brought some of New Leaf's most enriching and exciting work to-date.  Like the forests around us, we've been busy growing - strengthening our roots with a new office in New York, stretching out our branches into new regions, gathering resources that can fruit into new strategies, and building reserves for the future as the seasons roll on and opportunities emerge.  Thank you for your continued support as we work together to address the dual threats of climate change and biodiversity collapse. By sharing market intelligence and fostering collaboration, we hope to ensure the system is on a sustainable trajectory. Harry, Greg, and Mike New Research - Timberland Forests  We are excited to share Module 2 of our 2024 US Land Restoration Demand Assessment. The second release in this series delves into timberlands - the central pillar of America's climate-smart land use future.  This ongoing research, funded by The Rockefeller Foundation and the US Endowment for Forestry & Communities, marks a significant step in understanding and advancing sustainable land use and land restoration efforts across the United States. New Leaf's research builds on our 2023 Forest Nursery Assessment, which provided a comprehensive analysis of the US seedling supply chain. Watch this space for Module 3 on Agroforestry - exploring the soil, water, and financial drivers of this emerging force for land restoration.  We hope our analysis helps contextualize the opportunities and challenges that you all encounter - especially heading into a week of solutions and ambitious commitments.  Financing Biodiversity for National Forests We are delighted to announce we've been awarded an Innovative Finance for National Forest grant in partnership with Bat Conservation International. This grant will support a nursery loan guarantee program for agave restoration in Arizona and New Mexico to address native seedling supply challenges. The initiative aims to provide native agave seedlings for restoration plantings, delivering long-term ecological benefits starting in the Gila and Coronado National Forests. Investing in Resilient Communities in Missouri We've also teamed up with local partners in Missouri to evaluate financing strategies that fit local project needs - from native grasses on grazing land  to sawmill infrastructure to incentivize shortleaf pine forestry. Thanks to the support and vision of the Community Impact team at Edward Jones, our work combines investing in climate-smart small businesses, with understanding bigger picture questions around the type, scale, and access to resources communities need to build resilient, sustainable and inclusive economies.  Field Updates Our time out on the road exploring new projects and engaging with our friends, peers, clients, and investors continues apace:  New Leaf congregates in New York next week to maximize our coverage - shuttling from Brooklyn Navy Yard to the Bronx and beyond - we hope to see you somewhere in there.  Jake and Harry then set off for the Land Trust Alliance Rally in Providence to talk about how to define and finance an ever-increasing pipeline of land restoration and conservation projects.  Harry and Greg will be spending some quality time down in Florida for the Biennial Longleaf Conference on the 8th-11th October. Kunsang expanded our forest carbon market analysis through the  Carbon Collaboration Workshop hosted by Dovetail Partners and the US Endowment in Montgomery Bell State Park, Tennessee. Harry dug deep into agroforestry project design and implementation at the Expanding Agroforestry Project workshop in Ithaca. Greg enriched our stakeholder collaboration and alignment at the Volgenau Climate Initiative event in Nebraska City. Mike attended the Bloomberg Green Festival in Seattle, WA, meeting with local and state leaders on financing nature restoration in the region. Frank led the completion of site preparations for the Bella Vista restoration pilot project, and is looking ahead to the upcoming planting season in the late fall. Dear Leafer, Spring is springing - buds are budding, trees are leafing and, with the IRA and BIL funding flows clicking into place, the future has never looked greener for the US.  Or should that be cleaner? Because within this once-in-a-lifetime climate finance flow, nature risks being left out in the cold.  The historic $27B Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF) allocations announced in April has limited application for nature - even if there are low-hanging sequestration and energy efficiency strategies in exactly the same target communities. And yet, even a 1% spillover from GGRF would still be larger than the total funding flowing through the USFS Forest Landowner Support and the NbS allocation of last year’s Climate Smart Commodities grants.  We are firm believers in more is more - that is, we are excited to see the catalytic impact of this funding on the clean energy and energy efficiency landscape, particularly in underserved communities throughout the country. At the same time, we know we have a growing investment shortfall in the conservation and restoration economy. We urgently need to ramp up funding volumes for nature to match the ambition we are seeing for clean infrastructure and integrate a market-facing approach that leverages grant funding to build long-term, scaled flows of private capital. So while we push for IRA 2.0/GGRF 2.0 for nature and land use, we’ve been hard at work building a Nature Development Finance Institution (NDFI) that makes the case for how the CDFI model can be tailored to implement the next generation of NbS projects.  Here are some highlights from the past few months. We’d love to share, connect and learn as we go – please get in touch.  Harry, Greg, and Mike Activities Investment Analysis and Research: Coming off of a successful private capital roundtable at the Rockefeller Foundation on 1st March, we’re doubling down on our work to map the sustainable land use investment landscape and potential so that decision-makers are better able to prioritize NbS strategies. Supply Chain Investment: We’re actively raising our Forest Inputs Resilience Fund to deploy flexible capital to seedling nurseries and related businesses that underpin the US restoration value chain - and we have a compelling $50M+ pipeline of deal flow spanning 15 states. Conservation Assessment: We’ve added another pillar to our advisory toolbox, leading baseline assessment analyses for properties with high conservation value in CA for a local Land Trust. As we continue to build out a robust suite of services, let us know where else we can help. Project Development: We’ve been quietly working on a financing mechanism for small acreage land stewards, demonstrating high-value conservation and access to carbon markets for underserved markets. Thanks to the generous support of the Bella Vista Foundation, we’ve now raised funds for the first - a blue oak woodland restoration project in Northern California. We’ll be kicking off site prep and landowner technical assistance efforts at the end of May. Activities We’ve been crisscrossing the country meeting with stakeholders, strategizing with partners and speaking at industry events In March, we spent a week in Missouri (St Louis > Ozarks > Jefferson City > Columbia) meeting with potential project partners and digging into the on-the-ground restoration financing needs. Kunsang represented us at the SUMASA Sustainability Symposium with highlights including a deep dive discussion on pioneering the circular economy from supply chain and investment leaders. In April, Greg spoke on an Impact Investing panel during the Ignite Summit at Columbia, talking about the need for impact-first capital focused on nature. Mike participated in a fireside chat to discuss best practices in sustainable investing and the future of nature-based investments at GAIM Alternative Investing Conference. Harry presented our NDFI strategy and Nursery Fund at the Conservation Finance Network roundtable in Durham, North Carolina. Harry also presented on seedling supply challenges on a panel at the Environmental Markets Conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Mike’s session from last year’s SOCAP was released here: Catalyzing Investments in Nature-Based Solutions: Moving From Niche to Mainstream. Team Harry and Greg wrapped up an exhausting and exhilarating first year teaching as part of SIPA’s Sustainable Investing Research Initiative with a great crop of students, including a fantastic capstone team analyzing rural SME financing under the sage tutelage of Ralph Schmidt - many thanks for their input. While all this was going on, Erica found time to marry her longtime partner in Mexico City, MX - Congratulations Erica!  Asks We’re continuing our travel schedule - in Nashville, TN, St. Louis, MO, Atlanta, GA, Nebraska City, NE, and Washington, D.C. in the coming weeks. Winter '24

Happy February, friends of New Leaf.  This time of year is always exciting for us. These February days herald the earliest awakenings of spring – crisp mornings bursting with new growth and possibility. Much is the same for our work. We’ve started the year at a sprint, kicking off with our first strategy offsite and launching a few milestone projects in what’s shaping up to be an impactful 2024. Here are some highlights of recent weeks, and a few asks for our network as we look ahead. Best, Mike, Harry and Greg Activities We’re excited to announce support from the Rockefeller Foundation to complete a US reforestation and land restoration demand assessment. This will supplement our existing body of work on restoration supply side challenges. We have been heads down planning an investor roundtable hosted by Rockefeller on March 1st in NYC to make sure our research aligns with investments and to get input on our product ideas. We have DC, Atlanta, Pittsburgh and St. Louis in the travel diary for the coming months, let us know if we can stop by. Jake attended the Society for Range Management Conference in Reno, NV to go deeper on grassland and rangeland conservation. Team 2024 brought the team together in New York's Catskills Mountains for our first all-hands “reTreet.” We balanced mission and strategy with fresh air in the snowy, beautiful forests around us (see photo evidence below). We're excited to translate momentum from those sessions into investment, insights and impact.  We welcomed Kunsang Dorjee from the comfort of strategy consulting at Ogilvy after a BA in physics and philosophy at Yale. He’ll be helping us deliver on our reforestation demand analysis, as well as bringing the Nursery Financing Facility to market. Reading The World Economic Forum’s latest Global Risks Report showed consensus that extreme weather events are most likely to create a global crisis in 2024. But respondents disagreed over the urgency of risks from biodiversity loss and critical change to earth systems.  A cohort of 320 organizations, representing $14 trillion in assets under management, committed to disclosing nature-related financial risks through the Task Force on Nature-Related Financial Disclosure (TNFD) framework. Norges Bank Investment Management, which oversees Norway’s $1.4 trillion sovereign wealth fund, highlighted significant risks to nature, specifically to water use and ecosystem conversion in its initial disclosure. Banks and other financial institutions are beefing up their biodiversity functions -- one of the youngest but fastest growing segments of sustainable investing. In addition to emerging disclosure regulations, investors are becoming increasingly aware of potential financial risks associated with nature. In a recent survey, 72% of global investors are either “very” or “somewhat” interested in taking nature and biodiversity risks into account. Fall '23

Dear faithful leaf reader, The days are getting shorter, the leaves are piling up and the carbon markets are being dragged through the mud. Such are the cycles of life.  This past few months, many of you have likely heard me say some version of “Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?” When wars are raging and it feels like the world keeps burning, it can be particularly tough to focus on the tasks at hand - but on those days it’s good to be in the hope and growth business. And there’s no business more hopeful, and truly no growth more accessible, then that which Nature’s seasons provide. We’re working day in, day out to support her growth, and help others do the same. More partners keep letting us know they believe in our approach to validating that hope, and keep stepping up to join us in that growth - ensuring there are more leaves to rake next year than this one. We are thankful for it. We appreciate it. We’re here for it. Let’s never stop hoping, and always keep growing.  Gratitude We’re thrilled to have begun working with the Edwards Mother Earth Foundation, who has stepped in to support our work on the growth of the Nursery Finance Facility. More on that rollout soon - for now just a note of gratitude for this like minded and generous new partner! Following on and complimenting our nursery assessment (supply side of the restoration and reforestation market), we are grateful for the support we've received to kick off a new research project to forecast the demand side (economic, policy and human) drivers for the tree planting and land restoration market. We'll be exploring how that demand tracks across geographies, implementing partners and investment opportunities. We're exceedingly thankful that this work will be in partnership with, and financially supported by, an expert foundation partner who we could not be more excited to be working with. An announcement on this will follow soon, and we'll look forward to knocking on many of your doors about this work in the new year.   Activities Mike’s panel on catalyzing investments in nature-based solutions at SOCAP23 was standing room only, highlighting the interest and momentum growing around the topic. Great seeing friendly faces and meeting new connections to cultivate BC & Western Forest Nursery Association meetings in Portland, Oregon was a fantastic chance for Harry to ground truth our nursery analysis and expand our network, as well as offering a moment to acknowledge the hard work of the RNGR team who pulled it all together, in particular Diane Haase who retires this year (grateful for your partnership these past few years Diane!). New York Climate Week was an action-packed affair, that feels like a year ago.  Highlights included a doubling-down on conversations about nature, blended finance and the need for a return to quality in the ecosystem services markets. Great talk, sooo much more implementation required - as always. Team We are very excited to welcome Veenu King to the team, to take our advisory work to the next level. She’s joining after completing her Masters in Environmental Management from Yale and several years experience as a data science and technical research lead. Research & Asks  The nursery assessment has continued to draw interest from the forestry sector - from both large organizations and, excitingly, from individual nursery owners themselves. The inbound is gratifying, and exceedingly helpful. Summer '23

Dear Leafers, Roll on New York Climate Week and, with it, a shift into autumn action - harvesting, processing, prepping and replanting. Not that the summer was restful - we’ve been out in the field sharing our analyses, expanding our partnerships and tinkering with investment concepts. In the background, like everyone else, we have been battered and bruised by the impact that changing climate is putting on landscapes and livelihoods - wildfires, heatwaves, flooding. Within that context, we’ve been lucky to build traction with such constructive funders and partners. Your response to our work has unlocked follow-on funding and new opportunities that we’re excited to deliver on in the rest of the quarter - doing more research, moving into implementation and raising capital.  Activities With our tremendous partners at the US Endowment for Forestry and Communities, we’ve published the high level takeaways from our upstream forestry supply chain assessment - available in summary and full form - and we’ve been thrilled by the engagement so far.  On the road:  We presented our work in State College in July at the Southern and North-eastern Forest Nursery Association annual meeting We’re fresh back from the Land Trust Alliance rally in Portland, OR. We're working on a few new proposals and funding channels, including submissions for the USFS NOFO on innovative support for underserved landowners.
